Well water, coffee systems and ice

Where a house draws from its own well, the small filter inside an appliance is the last line of defence rather than the first. What the whole-house treatment does or does not remove decides how long everything downstream of it lasts.

Sediment, iron and hardness do different damage

They are worth separating, because the remedies differ. Fine sediment blinds screens and shortens fills, which is what makes cubes small. Iron stains and leaves deposits that discolour ice and give it a taste people describe as metallic. Hardness deposits scale in the fill tube and the mould, which is what makes a harvest stick. An appliance filter chosen without knowing which of the three you have is a guess.

Several appliances, one supply

A Dover house frequently has more plumbed appliances than anybody counts: the kitchen ice maker, a second maker in a pantry or bar, a wine cabinet with humidity control, and often a coffee system. They share a supply and a treatment regime, and sizing that regime for one appliance while four others draw from it is a common and expensive mistake.

Established on a Dover call

  • What the treatment train actually is, and when it was last serviced
  • Whether a softener bypass has been left open after service
  • Pressure and fill volume measured at each plumbed appliance
  • Deposit in the inlet screens, fill tubes and moulds
  • Total draw on the line against the filter capacity fitted

The coffee machine itself is not repaired here, and neither is the well treatment plant — that is a water contractor’s work. The ice makers, the refrigeration and the appliance-side supply are ours.

Warm pocket at the top of the column while the bottom was fine. The circulation fan was turning slow on a worn motor. He swapped it, left a thermometer overnight, and phoned the next day for the reading.

Cubes came out half size and far apart. Blocked screen in the inlet valve, so the fill was short. Cleaned, three test cycles, back to normal.

The display reset to factory default overnight and the whole collection swung with it. A loose ribbon connector sat behind the control head. He reseated and secured it, then watched it through two power cycles.
