Coffee systems in a Somerville kitchen run
Somerville kitchens are the tightest this bench works in, and a built-in coffee system in one is usually stacked directly above or beside a refrigerated drawer. Two heat-producing appliances in a metre of cabinetry is an arrangement with consequences.

Two appliances, one cupboard, one air supply
A coffee system rejects heat and so does a refrigerated drawer, and in a condo-conversion kitchen they are frequently in the same joinery with a single small vent between them and the room. The drawer is the one that suffers: it runs continuously, never quite reaches set point, and — because undercounter units mostly do not alarm — nobody notices until something in it spoils.
The check is simple and it is the one worth doing. Log the drawer against its set point over a full cycle with the kitchen in normal use, and see whether it is actually holding.
Circuits and shutoffs in an older building
The other Somerville constraint is electrical and plumbing legacy. A kitchen refit in a two- or three-family often lands several appliances on fewer circuits than a new build would use, and the isolating valve for the kitchen water line can be somewhere entirely unhelpful. Both are worth establishing before a fault forces the issue.
Checked on a Somerville call
- The undercounter unit logged against set point in real conditions
- Ventilation between the appliance cupboard and the room
- Whether the cabinet can be drawn forward at all, and onto what
- Location and condition of the water isolating valve
- Building rules on contractor hours, which apply in most conversions
The coffee machine itself goes to somebody who repairs coffee machines. The refrigerated drawer or cabinet next to it, and the water line feeding both, are what this bench takes on.

The maker in the column stopped right after we changed the filter ourselves. The housing was not seated, so the flow switch never saw pressure. Ten minutes to sort, and he did not make me feel silly about it.

Compressor noise was carrying up into the dining room through the floor. The mounting grommets had perished. He renewed them and levelled the cabinet, and the hum is now something you have to listen for.

Rear addition kitchen with the wine column tucked at the end of the cabinet run. One zone would not hold below the mid fifties no matter what we set. A sensor had failed open. He replaced it, verified with a probe on the middle shelf, and it has held.
