What a repair visit actually covers
A repair here begins with readings rather than a guess. The cabinet is measured through a full cycle before anybody names a part, because four different faults produce the same complaint and only the instruments tell them apart.

Four systems, and a fault lives in exactly one
Almost every complaint about a built-in cabinet resolves into one of four places: the control that decides what should happen, the airflow that moves cold around, the defrost cycle that keeps the evaporator clear, and the sealed system that makes the cold in the first place. They fail in very different ways and they cost very different amounts to put right, which is why the order they are eliminated in matters.
The order runs from cheap and likely to expensive and rare. A condenser choked with dust, a fan motor drawing high, a damper that has stopped travelling, a thermistor reading two degrees out — all of these produce a cabinet that will not hold temperature, and all of them are found before a set of gauges comes anywhere near the process.
How the visit is sequenced
Temperatures are logged at the return air and inside the cabinet, against the set point rather than against the display. Defrost behaviour is watched through a cycle where the fault suggests it. Fan and compressor draw are measured under load, not at rest, because a motor on its way out will pass a resting test and fail a working one.
In this order
- Read the cabinet as it stands — set point, actual, and where the difference sits
- Condenser condition and condenser fan draw, the two things that decide whether it ever catches up
- Evaporator fan, damper travel and defrost termination
- Door closure and gasket contact, which on a panelled front is a mechanical job rather than an electrical one
- Sealed-system pressures last, once everything cheaper has been ruled out
What repairs cost here
These are the bands this bench works in. A quote is one figure for parts and labour together, given before anything is taken apart, and the service call comes off it once the work is approved. If the fault turns out to sit outside a band, you get told that on the phone rather than at the end.

When a cabinet is not worth the parts
It happens, and it is worth saying out loud on a page like this one. A sealed-system failure on a cabinet that has already had one, a control platform with no remaining parts supply, or corrosion through a liner — those are conversations about replacement, and replacement of a built-in is rarely just the appliance. Panels, cabinetry and a column often bought in pairs all sit on top of the sticker.
The honest version is that most cabinets we are called to are worth repairing, including a good many that their owners had already written off. Being independent is what makes that sentence safe to say: nobody here is selling the alternative.

Short cycling was tripping the kitchen circuit every couple of days. A failing start capacitor and not the compressor itself, which was a relief. He tested under load before packing up.

The panelled built-in beside the island quit cooling on the fresh food side only. Diagnosis took twenty minutes: the damper between compartments had jammed shut. He freed it, renewed the motor, rechecked both.

Rear extension kitchen, panel ready door catching the cabinet stile so it never quite shut. The hinge cams had worn. New hardware, careful shimming, and the alarm that kept waking us stopped that night.
