Moving an appliance in a hillside house

Split levels, half-flights and a kitchen a few steps up from the entry are all common here. It rarely stops a repair, but it changes the planning: an appliance that has to come out needs a route and a landing to sit on, and where the only path is a turn at the top of a flight that is a two-person job rather than a one-person one.

Half of what we do on these is environmental — moving an intake clear of a laundry, dealing with the room rather than the machine.

The other half is genuinely the appliance: zone sensors that have drifted, dampers that have stopped travelling, and door frame heaters that have failed and left the glass misting.
