Gas Smell: What to Do Immediately

If you smell gas, take immediate action. Safety first.

Immediate Steps

1. Don't Create Sparks

DO NOT:

  • Turn on/off lights
    • Use electrical switches
      • Use phone inside
        • Light matches or candles
          • Start car in garage

          2. Open Windows/Doors

          • If safe to do so
            • Create ventilation
              • Exit path clear

              3. Turn Off Gas

              If you can safely:

              • Locate main shutoff
                • Turn to off position
                  • Usually at meter

                  4. Leave the Area

                  • Get everyone out
                    • Including pets
                      • Move away from building

                      5. Call for Help

                      From outside/neighbor's:

                      • Gas company emergency line
                        • 911 if strong smell or concern

                        Strong Gas Odor

                        • Leave immediately
                          • Call gas company
                            • Don't return until cleared

                            Faint Smell Near Range

                            • May be normal when lighting
                              • Should dissipate quickly
                                • Persistent smell needs attention

                                • Note when it occurs
                                  • Could be pilot issue
                                    • Schedule service

                                    • Gas company confirms safe
