Sub-Zero 650 Ice Maker Not Making Ice: Checks and Serial Tag
A Sub-Zero 650 ice maker that stops usually has a raised shut-off arm, a freezer warmer than 0°F, or a blocked water line or inlet valve. Check those first, then read the model and serial off the tag inside the door before you call.
If your Sub-Zero 650 ice maker has stopped, work through four things before deciding the ice maker itself is finished: the shut-off arm or switch, a freezer that has drifted above about 0°F, the water line behind the unit, and the inlet valve that fills the mold. Most stalled ice makers on this model come back to one of those. If none of them explains it, read the model and serial number off the tag inside the door before you phone, because on an older 600 Series machine those two lines decide which replacement parts actually fit.
Weston houses usually pair a full-height built-in in the kitchen with a second refrigerator in a pantry, mudroom or garage bay, so a 650 with no ice is rarely an emergency. It is still worth diagnosing properly rather than by guesswork.
Where the 650 sits in the Sub-Zero lineup
The 650 belongs to the 600 Series, an older family identified by three digits. It predates the Built-In line, the BI models Sub-Zero lists as made from 2008 to 2022, and it predates the March 2019 renaming that turned Built-In into Classic and Integrated into Designer. A 650 still running today is a mature appliance with a long parts history.
Current model numbers are designed to be decoded: letters for the product line, such as CL, BI or DET, then digits for the width, then letters for features like panel style, door type and dispensers. A 650 does not follow that pattern. Its badge shows the three digits, sometimes with a short suffix after a slash. The number tells a technician the family and the general layout, but not which version of the ice maker, valve or control sits behind the panel. The serial number does that.
Finding and reading the serial tag
Sub-Zero manuals call the tag a rating plate. If your 600 Series has its freezer at the bottom, check high on the fresh-food door close to the upper hinge; a side-by-side keeps the plate on the freezer door. Open the door fully and run a flashlight along the inner edge, since a door shelf often hides part of it.
The plate carries more than most owners expect. Besides the model and serial, it records the date the unit was built, its electrical draw in amps, and both the type and the charge of refrigerant inside. The date settles the age question outright. The refrigerant details matter if the ice problem turns out to be a cooling problem, because sealed-system work depends on them. Photograph the whole plate and keep the picture on your phone. Our guide to ordering the right Sub-Zero part explains why a part matched by model alone so often arrives wrong.
Why it stopped: checks in the order that pays off
None of these needs more than a thermometer and a flashlight.
- Shut-off arm or switch. If the wire arm is lifted or the switch is off, production stops by design. Lower it and allow a few hours.
- Freezer temperature. Leave a thermometer between frozen packages overnight. Well above 0°F, the mold never gets cold enough to release cubes, and soft ice cream points to cooling rather than the ice maker.
- Supply line. Confirm the shutoff feeding the unit is fully open. If the refrigerator was rolled out for cleaning or floor work, inspect the line behind it for a kink.
- Frozen fill tube. An iced-over tube lets the valve hum while no water reaches the mold. Thawing it solves today; learning why it froze solves next month.
- Inline filter. The 600 Series has no internal water filter, so any filter on your line was added later. An old cartridge can starve the valve until cubes come out small and hollow.
Small, hollow or clumped cubes are a different symptom from no ice at all. The ice quality guide for Weston kitchens separates supply, fill valve and harvest faults.
Repair or replace on a 650
When the only fault on a 650 is ice, repair is normally the sensible choice. Replacing the ice maker, water valve or supply line typically lands in the $290–$670 range, against $8,010–$19,770 for a comparable built-in refrigerator, appliance only, before cabinetry and installation. The arithmetic changes if the same visit uncovers a failing compressor or sealed system, typically $1,010–$2,080; on a machine this age, that is the moment for an honest conversation about replacement.
The first step is identical either way. A flat $95 pays for the visit and a complete diagnosis, and we deduct it from the bill when you approve the repair. The firm quote follows the diagnosis, never a phone description. We are an independent service and we fit factory-approved parts. Our ice maker repair page covers how these visits run.
Sometimes the real complaint is volume, not a fault. Sub-Zero’s UC-15I undercounter ice maker produces up to 50 lb a day and stores up to 25 lb, which is why some owners add one near a bar instead of asking more of the 650.
What to have ready when you call
Before you ring (781) 604-1175, gather the rating plate photo, the freezer temperature you measured, and a line on what changed: no ice, fewer cubes, smaller cubes or water on the floor. Say which checks you already ran so the visit starts where you stopped. We serve Weston, Sudbury, Needham and Newton Lower Falls, and a technician who knows the serial number beforehand has a far better chance of carrying the right part on the first trip.
Asked on the phone
Why has my Sub-Zero 650 stopped making ice?
Most often the shut-off arm is raised, the freezer has warmed above about 0°F, or water is not reaching the mold because of a closed shutoff, a kinked line or a frozen fill tube. If all of those check out, the inlet valve or the ice maker assembly itself has probably failed and needs a proper diagnosis.
Is it worth fixing the ice maker on a Sub-Zero 650?
Usually yes, provided the refrigerator still cools well. Most jobs on the icemaker, its fill valve or the water line come to $290–$670, while a comparable built-in refrigerator runs $8,010–$19,770 for the appliance alone. The firm price comes after diagnosis, which is a flat $95 that is deducted once you approve the work.
Where is the serial number on a Sub-Zero 650?
It is printed on the rating plate fixed inside one of the doors. A 600 Series unit with the freezer below keeps that plate high on the fresh-food door, close to the upper hinge, while a side-by-side keeps it on the freezer door. The plate shows the model, serial number, build date and refrigerant details.
Does a Sub-Zero 650 have a water filter for the ice maker?
No, the 600 Series was built without an internal water filter. If your ice maker has one, a plumber fitted it on the supply line, often under a sink or in the basement, and a neglected cartridge there can slow the flow enough to shrink the cubes.
Where can I find a Sub-Zero 650 parts diagram or manual?
Begin with the model and serial number from the rating plate, because the correct ice maker assembly and valve for an older unit can depend on both. With those two numbers in hand, a parts counter or technician can match your production run instead of guessing from the model badge.
